Its finally here. Six days until we get on a plane and fly from Tallahassee to Atlanta, then on to Madrid. We will overnight in Madrid then take a 5 hour train ride to Hendaya, France; then catch a bus to St Jean Pied de Port.
On June 7th, we start. The first day is supposed to be the most difficult taking us 18 miles over the Pyrenees. Yikes! 500 miles? We are hiking 500 miles? And we start climbing over a mountain range? And it may take 50+ days?
Now the worry wart in me surfaces. How am I going to be away from my business for this long? What about our house? We rented to a couple that needed a home while their new home is being built. What if they don’t take care of the house? What about our Children and Grandchildren? What about money? What about walking 500 miles with a 17 pound backpack? What about the weather? What about my limited Spanish skills? What about our training? I ran a few marathons and I always had a training program to get ready. Our training has been lax.
Unfortunately my wife read a blog about someone who was 50 lbs over weight and never trained and said they never had a problem. Once she read that post, she initiated her training based on this premise. Hmmm! Doesn’t sound like a good idea to me. Just today she brought a guidebook that mentioned only 10% of pilgrims train prior to walking.
Well, it is what it is, we are leaving in six short days. It seems that this is going to be a life changing event. I am counting on it being a positive life changing event. I am certain my wife Morgan and I will complete this trek and be forever changed.
Today is my second time every posting a blog. I welcome your feedback where I can improve. Tomorrow, I try to post using an iPhone which is my planned methodology in the trip. Should be interesting.
